Dan Ross - Silk Illusions
Listen to the demo of SIlk Illusions below:
"Silk Illusions" is a new composition by Adelaide based composer & pianist Dan Ross. It is written for piano and accompanying string orchestra and utilises 3rd stream techniques, combining both classical and jazz. It is influenced by Lizst and Australian composer Carl Vine with sporadic moments of joyful major blues licks creating an ambience of film noir.
DAN'S PROJECT NOTES:
Over the years I have focused more effort into my own composition and orchestrating techniques blending jazz and classical idioms together, historically this music has been coined as 3rd stream music. Meeting Sam has been a blessing for the expansion and mastering of my own compositions. Sam, having studied composition before, brings a more dynamic presence than any other audio engineers I have met in the past. Having a colleague like Sam whom also listens to a vast array of contemporary music (especially that of the ECM label and modern film score artists) brings an edge and quality to the music (as a participating orchestrator and audio engineer) which can truly be called world class. I look forward to continuing to work with larger projects like full orchestra and large ensemble. We are in the last stages of completing our first Duo album of piano & saxophone, plus another record of fusion music, featuring heavy electric synthesis and complex electronic mastering using state of the art technology. Many more to come soon.
COMPOSITION: Silk Illusions
This tune is written for piano and accompanying string orchestra, this composition utilises 3rd stream techniques. The AB form is repeated 3 times, each successive form rises a major second up in tone. The A section is an elaborate piano fantasy with a rising violin harmonic underpinning the theme. The piano holds influences of Lizst and Australian composer Carl Vine. The B section is a suspended blues vamp which utilises a dominant flat-6 scale creating a dark luminous aura yet counter acted with sporadic moments of joyful major blues licks creating an ambience of film noir.
